Mickey Morandini holds a special place in my Phillies' fandom. He was a solid hand in the middle of the infield. But Mickey was a talented glove at second base with a great bottom of the order bat. But, if you remember Mickey playing for the Phillies, you remember the epic, drawn out, goosebump inducing fashion in which Harry Kalas would announce "Mick-key Moh-ran-dee-nee". I've never seen (or heard) any announcer make such a delicious meal so regularly out of any player's name.
Morandini started his career a year late, opting out of the '87 Entry Draft in order to protect his amateur status allowing him to play for Team USA in the Seoul Olympics. After he finished his college career, he joined the Phillies organization where he was a highly touted prospect in the Phils' farm system.
He became an integral piece in the 1993 team, and represented the Phillies in the '95 All-Star game before moving on to the Cubs, returning to the Phillies and then moving on to Toronto before retiring. Three years later a young kid named Chase Utley settled in at second base and had himself a career, which unfortunately have overshadowed the career Morandini had at The Vet.
